MBA Colleges by CAT Percentile: Where You Get In at 99 / 95 / 90 / 85 / 80 / 70

1. How to read this list

Three things separate this from the usual listicle, and they change which column you should trust:

• Published minimums are not call cutoffs. A college's official qualifying percentile (often 80–90) only makes you eligible; the percentile at which interview calls actually go out is higher. Every figure below is the realistic call number for General category.
• Rounds matter. Many private B-schools run multiple admission rounds, and later-round cutoffs drop 5–10 percentile points. If a college matters to you, apply in round one — the same score buys more in January than in April.
• Profile moves the needle. SPJIMR shortlists on profile and can interview below its typical band; IIMs weigh Class 10/12 heavily; work experience helps at MDI and XLRI-style processes. Treat every number here as a band centre, not a wall.

2. The map: where calls start, college by college

99+The 99+ percentile club

Above 99, the conversation stops being "which college" and becomes "which call converts". Three names dominate:

95–9995–99: old IIMs and the big non-IIMs

90–9590–95: the widest set of good options

This band has the most seats of quality in the entire system — largely because of CAP, the Common Admission Process where one interview covers most of the newer IIMs at once.

85–9085–90: baby IIMs and strong private schools

80–8570–8080–85 and 70–80: still worth it — if you pick carefully

Below 85 the quality spread widens sharply, so placement reports matter more than brand recall. The names below have credible, verifiable outcomes:

3. The ROI reality check

Percentile decides which doors open; fees decide whether you should walk through. The extremes in the same city tier:

Both are excellent schools — but the same 95–98 percentile aspirant should understand that the FMS call is worth roughly ₹25 lakh more in avoided debt. The general rule at every band: public institutions (FMS, IITs, IIMs, JBIMS) recover their fee within months; premium private PGDMs take one to two years. Neither is wrong; loans just deserve to be a line item in your college list, not an afterthought.

4. Category-wise note

Every number above is General category. NC-OBC calls typically run 5–15 percentile points lower, and SC/ST substantially lower still — at several IIMs, SC/ST calls have gone out in the 55–75 band — because shortlisting happens within each category pool. EWS sits close to General at most institutes. If you're in a reserved category, shift every band in this article down before building your list, and verify against each college's official criteria.
