CAT vs GMAT vs XAT vs SNAP vs NMAT: Which Exam Should You Take?

• Want the IIMs and the widest Indian reach? CAT — non-negotiable, primary exam.
• Want XLRI Jamshedpur? XAT — the only route, with its unique Decision Making section.
• Want NMIMS Mumbai, and hate negative marking? NMAT — no penalty, three retakes, best score counts.
• Want a Symbiosis backup for minimal extra effort? SNAP — short, speed-based, CAT prep mostly covers it.
• Planning ISB, an international MBA, or a deferred programme? GMAT — global, year-round, a different track entirely.

3. Which is the toughest?

CAT and XAT are the hardest — CAT for its brutal competition and time pressure, XAT for its Decision Making section, which tests ethical and managerial judgement rather than formulas. GMAT is demanding but different: an adaptive test scored 205–805 against a global pool. NMAT and SNAP are moderate — the challenge is speed and accuracy, not conceptual depth, which is exactly why they make sensible additions rather than separate mountains to climb.

4. Exam calendar — why you can take several

The single best reason to write more than one exam: they don't clash. They're spread across four months, so one prep cycle peaks across all of them.

Register for NMAT early in its window (you can retake it before CAT if needed), peak for CAT in late November, use SNAP in December as a warm, low-stakes backup, and finish with XAT in January. It's one season, not five.

5. Each exam in brief

CAT — the default

The Common Admission Test opens the 21 IIMs and over 1,000 B-schools. Three sections (VARC, DILR, QA), 68 questions, 204 marks, and the deepest applicant pool in the country. If you write one exam, it's this.

XAT — the gateway to XLRI

Run by XLRI Jamshedpur for 160+ institutes. Adds two things CAT doesn't have: a Decision Making section (scenario-based ethics and management judgement) and a GK + Essay component used in XLRI's final selection. Worth it if XLRI is a target.

NMAT — the low-risk one

For NMIMS Mumbai and a growing list of schools. Three sections, 108 questions, no negative marking, and up to three attempts in a scheduling window with your best score counting. The most forgiving format of the five.

SNAP — the Symbiosis backup

Exclusive to 16 Symbiosis institutes (SIBM Pune being the flagship). Short — 60 questions in 60 minutes — held two to three times in December, best score counts. Minimal extra prep on top of CAT.

GMAT — the global option

Accepted by 7,000+ schools worldwide and select Indian programmes (ISB, some IIM one-year and executive MBAs). Adaptive, scored 205–805, bookable year-round, valid for five years. A different track for a different goal.

6. The smart exam portfolio

For most serious aspirants, the highest-return plan isn't one exam — it's a small, overlapping set:

Four exams, roughly one-and-a-bit preparations, and a college list that spans the IIMs, XLRI, NMIMS and Symbiosis. That's the standard playbook — add GMAT only if your goals are global.

7. When GMAT actually makes sense

GMAT isn't a CAT substitute for most people — it's for specific goals:

• ISB Hyderabad/Mohali and select Indian one-year / executive programmes.
• International MBAs — the US, Europe and Asia run on GMAT/GRE.
• Deferred-MBA plans — scores are valid five years, so final-year students can lock a score early.
• Flexibility seekers — book any date, retake without waiting a year.

If your horizon is a traditional Indian two-year MBA, CAT stays primary and GMAT is optional. If it's global or ISB, GMAT moves to the centre of your plan.
